To begin with, you know that social media, including Instagram, TikTok, Youtube vlogs, Twitter, and Facebook, can be very draining and a distraction to your everyday life. For starters, you may be lying in bed or on the sofa on your phone, viewing the latest trends on all platforms. I am too guilty of getting distracted when I am on my phone looking at videos on Tiktok when I am supposed to be writing new content or planning out the upcoming week. There’s no secret to personalized videos on the media that catch your attention to keep you entertained and keep you coming back for more. However, we must be mindful that we cannot compare ourselves to others based on what we see online.
You will learn how to take back control to focus on yourself of the importance of living in the now by minimizing your time on social media; just by following these simple steps that will be beneficial, and more time to focus on yourself + a bonus tip at the end.
After learning about these steps, this will become a positive habit you will follow each time you are very overwhelmed with social media and need to take a short or longer break from people in the world and want to take time for yourself and not others.
This post is all about focusing on yourself, not what is on social media that you should know.
Here are THE BEST TIPS you can apply to focus on yourself, not what is on social media.
1. Unfollow or Unsubscribe
This is the ultimate best first thing you can do for yourself, which is why you should be unfollowing people or content that does not serve you. This allows your algorithm to change effectively by controlling what you watch for your mental health. For my first example, watching toxic videos of people misbehaving online or obsessing over worldly things that many content creators or social media influencers buy to show off is not suitable for you. However, if you feel like it positively motivates you, then so be it, but If you’re watching the content to get entertainment from it, then it is best if you unfollow them because it is not benefiting you to pursue your purpose.
I usually unfollow people I feel are not motivating or inspiring me to improve in self-growth. Instead, I prefer to follow motivational, biblical quotes that uplift my spirit and mind.
2. Log out of all social media
Secondly, if you plan to take a break for a few hours from the online world, this may be in your best interest. Take the time to go into the apps, go to your settings, and finally, click on log out. This is the second step you need to take for yourself to not only get distracted by multiple notifications but also be so quick to pick up your phone to spend multiple minutes on social media. Logging out of social media is the best improvement that you can make for yourself; this is a healthy habit that you have obtained because now you have control over your peace.
When I first did this, of course, it was challenging because of this new habit, and it was very tempting not to hurry up and rush to my phone when I received a notification on my screen. However, this helped me to not rely on my phone all the time and that social media can wait a few hours because I believe that you should always put yourself first; not only can it help you as well but this can improve your disciplinary skills by breaking old habits and gaining new ones.
3. Removing the app from your home screen
This method is when you want to control your personal life completely. This includes turning off any notifications on your phone without distractions so that you can spend your time in the now rather than on celebrities and their drama. Removing the app from your home screen allows you to not worry about the app so much and that you will not be so distracted from the things that you want to do in your life, rather than spending your time and energy responding to negative people who are miles away from you and who never met you on a personal level. Trust me we’ve all been there before; responding to others because of their own opinion can literally drain you; it is not worth the time and energy to even respond because you know your worth!
